Remand inmate dies following fracas at the Port of Spain Prison.

One of the Remand inmates involved in the fracas at the Port of Spain Prison has died.

Sources disclosed to Uncutt News Media that the deceased is 26-year-old Shurlon Brown, an accused awaiting trial for murder.

He passed away at 12:20pm. on Friday 29th March 2024 while at the Port of Spain General Hospital under police and prison guard.

Brown is from Williams Village in Gasparillo and has been in prison custody since October 2020, when he was arrested and charged with the 2019 murder of Nicholas Fortune.

It was reported that around 9.30 am on September 18, 2019, several loud explosions were heard and Fortune was later found on a platform near his home on Balbadie Hill, Belle Vue, Long Circular, St. James, with gunshot injuries.

Marc Anthony Benois of Gauva Road Long Circular is also charged with Fortune’s murder.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Prisons Service confirmed a disturbance at the Port of Spain Prison, which resulted in several inmates and officers sustaining injuries.

The release added that an officer was escorting one of the inmates back to his cell when he became violent and uncontrollable as he refused lawful instructions to return to his cell.

It added that the officer was assaulted and he defended himself but was attacked by other inmates nearby.

The prison alarm was sounded and officers from the Emergency Response U it and other personnel responded and were able to quell the situation which resulted in several inmates and officers being injured.

Several prisoners, identified as known associates of Brown were among those injured who are accused of being part of the brawl.

Those inmates are Ayokie Charles, Sherwin Julien, Ray Paul Julien, and Adil Mansano, all murder accused.

The Prisons Commissioner Deopersad Ramoutar is quoted as saying that he has launched an investigation and also the police were notified so that they too can conduct investigations into the incident.

At Holy Thursday Mass at the Port of Spain Prison, Ramoutar apologised to inmates for whatever wrong his officers may have committed against them.
